Five Tips for Journaling Your Way to Better Emotional Health
Journaling might be the answer you’ve been looking for to get past stressful times as a caregiver. Being a caregiver involves a lot of different emotions and juggling them can be exhausting. Writing in a journal gives you a way to give those emotions an outlet.
Don’t Try to Make it Perfect
One of the big problems for a lot of people with journaling is that there is a drive to make the journal perfect. Or that if it isn’t perfect, it’s somehow not going to do the job correctly. Focus instead on what you’re writing in the journal, not how it looks.
Set Aside Time Each Day
Consistency can be really important for a lot of people who journal for emotional health. Your brain can become used to thinking about and purging some of the emotions you’re dealing with at a certain time every day. You don’t have to set aside a lot of time. Even five minutes every day can be more than enough.
Don’t Censor Yourself
Another common problem is that people writing journals censor what they write down. Whether you’re worried that someone else will read your words or you’re just afraid to see your feelings in print, it’s important that you stop censoring yourself. You can’t get any real progress in if you’re hiding your feelings. If you find that you’re censoring yourself, pretend that you’re writing for a friend. Sometimes that ruse can help you to sneak past your internal censor.
Use What You’ve Written
It’s really helpful to go back over what you’ve written and see what you notice after you’re done. You might not feel comfortable doing that just yet, though. Try a few different ways of reviewing what you’ve written, either daily or weekly, and see if that helps you to learn new things about your feelings or see new ways to handle situations.
Stick with It
If you stick with your journaling habit, you’ll eventually find yourself reaping some really strong results. This progress doesn’t happen overnight or after just one journal entry, though. You’ll need to keep going if you want to make long-term progress that really helps you with your emotions.
Journaling is just a tool. If you find that it’s not helpful to you on your journey as a caregiver, don’t feel as if you have to stick with it no matter what. You need to make way for the tools that actually help and serve you the best.
