How to Improve an Elderly Loved One’s Home to Accommodate Poor Vision
Home Care Drexel Hill PA
When an elderly loved one has difficulty with her vision, she may start to feel that she is in danger of losing her independence. That doesn’t have to be the case, however, especially if some of these ideas help her to see more easily at home.
Look at Lighting First
One of the biggest improvements that you can make for a loved one who has trouble seeing is to improve the lighting conditions in her home. Putting in better fixtures, stronger bulbs, or even simply more fixtures can make a tremendous difference in what your loved one is able to see or not see. If there’s wiring involved, make sure that you work with a licensed electrician.
Reduce Glare Wherever Possible
After lighting, glare is another huge source of problems for a loved one with vision trouble. Check the main areas where your loved one spends time at different times of day to verify and adjust for glare. You may need to move pictures or mirrors and even change out window treatments in order to accommodate for glare. If your loved one has glasses, consider adding an anti-glare coating to the lenses.
Increase Contrasts around the Home
Contrasts are much more obvious than you might think to someone who has vision trouble. They can grab your loved one’s attention much more quickly than slight variations in shading or color can. If your loved one has stairs, for example, try using bright tape on the edges of each stair tread to make it stand out more. Look for ways that you can increase contrast as much as possible.
Organize, Organize, Organize
Disorganization is really disastrous for someone who has vision issues. Work with your loved one to reduce clutter as much as possible. Your loved one may also need help in areas such as the kitchen, the bedroom, and the bathroom to organize all of her necessary items in such a way that they’re easy to see and to access.
If you’re concerned about leaving your elderly loved one on her own when you can’t be there, having someone else there, either another family member or an elderly home care provider, can give you both peace of mind.
